A Flintshire social enterprise has relaunched in a bid to support the local community.

CAFgas CIC is a social enterprise founded by James Hunt, originally to financially support Nanny Biscuit, also founded by James to help the Flintshire community and beyond.

Social enterprises are businesses that address a social or environmental challenge rather than creating profit for owners or shareholders. In CAFgas's case, this means that money made that would create a profit is being used to support the local community through charity.

CAFgas has been supporting Nanny Biscuit for the last few years, but the popularity of Nanny Biscuit, which has been a buddy call system for those who may feel lonely, provided Christmas meals and more recently food pantries for the community, means it is now progressing to become a charity.

This has led to a relaunch of CAFgas, whereby it will now support a number of charities, including Nanny Biscuit. These charities are Adferiad Recovery, Hope House and Woody’s Lodge.

The partnership will see money going into these charities and helping them to provide their vital services.

An event in Sandycroft Community Centre saw James giving a presentation about the relaunch as well as the opening of the latest pantry.

James said: “I’d ask the public to find out more about the social enterprises that are in the local area doing great things.

"They can receive something and benefit the community at the same time. If people use social enterprises more great stuff will be done in the communities and it's just really asking people to educate themselves on what social enterprises are and then find out more about the local social enterprises in the area."

Sir David Hanson, one of the trustees, spoke about the challenges people within the community face, including poverty, mental health, veterans coming into the community and those who are coming out of prison.

By helping a social enterprise, he said that people will be “putting back into the community” and helping support some of the people within.

Volunteer for Nanny Biscuit, Lesley Povey was thanked for her hard work during the presentation and presented with flowers. She thanked ‘everybody’ having said a few words about the new pantry at Sandycroft Community Centre, which will double up as a community hub.

The pantry will open on Fridays at 9.30am till 12.30pm and on Mondays 12pm till 2.30 pm when anyone can pick up ten items for £3.
