MOTORISTS travelling on a main route in Flintshire are facing 12 weeks of disruption as the council works on an active travel scheme.
Works have begun to implement a cycle track and footway on the A550 between Penyffordd and Hope.
The work, which also includes a new toucan crossing on the road, will last until Christmas.
The roadworks are to improve the viability of active travel and sustainable journeys along the A550 Penyffordd to Hope, whilst also improving accessibility and safety in and around Castell Alun High School and Ysgol Estyn Primary School.

Following an online public consultation in October 2021 and feedback received, the scheme details have now been finalised and consist of the following elements:
- New 2.5m shared use footway / cycleway facility along the length of the A550 from Penyffordd roundabout connecting to the existing footway provision at the Mountain View housing estate.
- New Toucan crossing on the A550 Wrexham Road to enable safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Reduced mandatory speed limit along the frontage of Castell Alun High School on Fagl lane to 20mph, and along the extents of Stryt Isa, which serves as an alternative entrance to the school, and on the A550 Hawarden Road within the locality of Ysgol Estyn. The reduced speed limit aims to address speeding issues on these roads, whilst also ensuring that they are brought up to the required standard for encouraging the use of active travel.
- Provision of ‘Gateway Entry Improvements ‘ on the approaches to Castell Alun High School (front and rear entrance) and Fagl Lane, Stryt Isa and Ysgol Estyn Primary School highlighting the reduced speed limit.
- Implementation of parking restrictions along Stryt Isa and Fagl Lane, and the immediate vicinity of Castell Alun High School and nearby junctions.

Traffic management will be in operation throughout the period of work and continued access for the travelling public, local businesses and residents will be maintained at all times.
Flintshire Council said it would like to take the opportunity to thank the local community and residents for their continued cooperation and support during the forthcoming works, which will enable the delivery of welcomed improvements to active travel facilities.
