ROADWORKS have sparked 'bedlam' on a main road between Flintshire and Wrexham.

The works, listed on Flintshire Council's website as "water drainage investigation works", are taking place on A541 Wrexham Road in Cefn-y-Bedd.

Four-way traffic lights are in place, leaving queues stretching back around a mile on the A541 in both directions. It is reportedly taking people up to an hour to get to Wrexham from the roadworks.

People have been taking to a local social media group to bemoan the roadworks.

One woman said on Monday night: "I left Buckley at 5pm, got to Sainsbury's in Wrexham at 6.40pm."

Another said it took them an hour and a half to get to work this morning from Kinnerton to Wrexham.

A further comment said: "It's absolute bedlam, folks blocking the crossroads so you can't leave from Abermorddu School. Took 35 minutes to go to Hope doctors and back and that's using the back lane off Bryn Yorkin to Cymau."

According to Flintshire Council's website, the roadworks will be completed by September 30.

Flintshire’s Chief Officer for Streetscene and Transportation, Katie Wilby, said: “We are currently undertaking investigatory works at the junction of the A541 Wrexham Road and B5102 Ffrwd Road following reports of surface water collecting on the carriageway. Whilst every effort has been made to limit the disruption to the travelling public and local community, it was necessary to undertake excavation works in order to identify the source of the problem.

“We recognise that the location was subject to disruption following the implementation of traffic signal improvement works last year; however, the current works are necessary in order to remedy the flooding and drainage problems.  The traffic management contractors are continuing to monitor the situation and will remain on site for the duration of the works.  We would like to thank residents for their continued patience and apologise for any inconvenience caused, as we seek to resolve the matter as quickly as possible.”
