A WREXHAM man has opened up about his experiences after being selected to star in a BBC show.

Liam Davies, 20, took part in the BBC Three show, 'Hire Me' earlier this year which follows young men and women taking on challenges and tasks in a bid to earn a position working within their dream industry.

The six-part series, presented by Radio 1 DJ, Snoochie Shy looks to find the next prospect of talent in different industries. In each episode, candidates are set two challenges in the highest end of their industry which will determine a winner who will go on to work within that sector.

Liam, from Wrexham, has been coaching football since he was 15, and had little idea of what he wanted to go on to do; with an E grade in his biology exam putting his initial aspirations of being a physio to bed.

Liam began to help PE teachers with after school football sessions, which immediately started his love for being a coach and working within that environment.

Fast forward five years later, Liam has successfully created a ‘Joe Wicks- style’ TikTok channel which he devised during lockdown to keep up his passion, showcasing tips and tricks for young footballers which has proved to be a resounding success with over 50,000 likes and over 3,500 followers.

Upon leaving Wrexham to join Birmingham City University, Liam found himself at Solihull Moore’s, coaching their under 7’s side, which is where he was introduced to an opportunity to apply for the BBC Three show, Hire Me; which admittedly was a perfect opportunity for Liam to showcase his talent and passion for coaching.

After a long process, Liam beat thousands of applicants to be selected to compete against two other aspiring coaches, for the chance to land a coaching role at Premier League side, Wolverhampton Wanderers in their academy setup.

Liam’s challenges saw him interview and analyse the performances of Premier League footballer, Luke Cundle and then go on to coach a team of youngsters against a Wolves academy side.

Reflecting on his time on the show, Liam said: “It was quite an experience, sat in Costa Coffee with the BBC! I gave a good account of myself and was fortunate to make it to the final three who featured on the show, to get to that point in the first place was just testament to the work I’d put in.

“The experience was really humbling. Watching myself back on TV was a really good experience. Seeing what’s happening in the town at the moment (Wrexham), I’ve been able to make a bit of a name for myself within Wrexham, knowing I can be a role model to some kids I’ve coached in the town I grew up and supported is a really special feeling.

“My family has made a lot of sacrifices for me too so I’m glad I’ve been able to repay that.”

BBC’s Hire Me featuring Liam is now available to view on BBC iPlayer.
