Farndon will be hosting its first Soapbox Derby this weekend, celebrating community spirit and raising as much money as possible.
The free event welcomes all to attend as 35 hand-built, customised racing karts hit the track one by one through the village of Farndon in a bid for pole position, in what is guaranteed to raise a lot of laughter as well as a lot of money for The Hospice of the Good Shepherd.
Celebrity Olympic sporting legend, Eddie Edwards, also known as Eddie the Eagle, will be at the event and presenting the prizes.

The event has been entirely pulled together by a group of local Farndon residents who really wanted the village to have something special to look forward to after the Covid pandemic and have been working tirelessly for nearly two years to make the event a great success.
Farndon Primary School will be the social hub of the event and is hosting a full day of entertainment in the playing fields where a wide variety of local produce, hot and cold food and beverages, artisan stalls, and musical talents can be savoured and enjoyed by all.

The event has been generously sponsored by local Cheshire businesses and entrepreneurs including Gittins and Co, the Rickitt Partnership, Kenney Moore, Ellis and Co, Daulby Reid and RF Bellis Haulage to name a few.
Pauline Amphlett, wife of Hugh Sym who came up with the idea for the Farndon Soapbox Derby said: “Since the idea for the Farndon Soapbox Derby first came to my husband Hugh in 2020, I have been absolutely blown away by the local support that has been forthcoming.

“The organising team for the Farndon Soapbox Derby is all local residents who all have full time jobs and yet, have continued to push to create our fantastic event that will benefit not only the Hospice of the Good Shepherd but our local communities too.
“If the Covid years taught us anything, it’s that people and community matter and it’s absolutely true to say ‘Teamwork makes the Dream Work’.
“I know I speak for the whole team when I say, although it’s been really, really hard work, we are all so proud to have had this opportunity to serve our community and to give everyone something really special to look forward to.
“We are hoping that now we have built the blueprint for the event, it will continue to be an annual event where friendship and community spirit remains at the heart of it all.”
The Farndon Soapbox Derby takes place on Sunday, September 18. Car parks open at 10am with the first race at 12pm. Prizegiving will be at 5pm.
There will be road closures in places from 7am until 7pm.
