A HOLYWELL town councillor is looking to brighten up the town by encouraging people to sponsor a step in the town centre.
Cllr Dan Thomas reached out on his social media channels to urge people to consider helping in his bid to add some colour to a set of 'dull' steps which lead towards the tower gardens, whilst also raising some awareness for members of the community with Alzheimer’s and additional needs.
Cllr Thomas said: “As a running coach and a keen ultra-runner, I cover a lot of miles. And with having dyslexia and ADHD I see things others wouldn’t normally see. Colour is what I notice out and about when I’m running. And I notice when things look dull with no life.

“As I was running up these steps, I thought they were dull which also put me in a dull mood. I realised as I was running through the under passage and up those steps that the whole area was grey and miserable."
Cllr Thomas’ Learning Steps scheme will encourage the people of Holywell to sponsor a step and customise it with a bright colour whilst leaving a message of their choice. It could be to promote a business, a conversation starter, or times tables to help children learn.
He added: “I put this idea straight onto my Facebook page to see what response I’d get. I wanted not only to help people with learning difficulties but also people with dementia.
“I wanted to create something positive for that area. Everybody thinks it’s a great idea."
A big part of what Daniel is trying to achieve is to rasie some awareness for older people in the community who may be suffering with Alzheimers, so the inclusion of conversation starters painted onto the steps, he feels is a great way to keep the mind active, for example, having questions such as “what’s your favourite childhood memory”
“Money, I found is always an issue. Therefore, why not get the community involved and they can help towards the funds of these steps by sponsoring a step, either with their business logo, their own name, or my favourite; a memorial step for a loved one. From this idea now and being a town councillor, I want to make Holywell town a colourful and dementia friendly town.”
Step sponsorship will be available from £50 and for more details, members of the public are urged to contact Councillor Thomas by messaging him via his Facebook page for more information.
