THE Rhyl Air Show is officially up and running once again for the first time since 2019!
After being unable to take place in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19, the free, award-winning, bank holiday weekend event returned this afternoon (August 27).
An RAF Military Dog Display kicked proceedings off, with the unmissable Red Arrows bringing things to close at 5pm.
Plenty more is to follow later today and tomorrow (August 28), including displays from RAF Typhoon, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and of course, the unmissable Red Arrows.
The Typhoon multi-role combat aircraft is designed to be aerodynamically unstable in subsonic flight.
Measuring 17ft 4in in height, and with a 35ft 11in wingspan, it has a top speed of 1,521mph, and a maximum reheat thrust of more than 40,000 lbs.
It was flown by Flight Lieutenant Adam O'Hare, creating an ear-splitting noise and an eye-opening display.
For starters, crowds watched as an award-winning RAF drug detection dog Tyson, and patrol dog Gizzy, gave impressive demonstrations.
Patrol dogs are employed at every RAF unit to detect, deter and detain people.
Following the stunning Battle of Britain Memorial Flight display, Vera Lynn's "We'll Meet Again" then rang out on the PA system.
There were plenty of stalls based in and near the Events Arena, including the Red Arrows, the RAF, the British Army, Sea Cadets, Sunset Aviation Art, and the RAF Typhoon Display Team.
Jamie Groves, managing director of Denbighshire Leisure Ltd, said: “Denbighshire Leisure Ltd, in partnership with Denbighshire County Council and Rhyl Town Council, is thrilled to be bringing back the now ‘UK-renowned’ Rhyl Air Show.
“The Rhyl Air Show is considered one of the most spectacular events across the North Wales coast.
“Rhyl Town Centre and Events Arena are always buzzing with excitement, and to have both the Red Arrows and Typhoon over both days is just amazing!
“We can’t wait to welcome visitors and locals to Rhyl and the Denbighshire coast to enjoy this award-winning show.”
