BEN TOZER says the Wrexham players learnt to take being the subject of a documentary in their stride but he is stunned by the way Welcome to Wrexham has been advertised over in America.
The hugely-anticipated documentary covers the rollercoaster journey since Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney became co-owners at The Racecourse 18 months ago.
Tozer, who joined the Reds’ from Cheltenham last August, found being followed around by camera crews common practice and the centre-back said: “It took a bit of getting used to.
“It is a bit alien because obviously that is not our job but it is something you get used to.
“The guys who came over from America were brilliant and made you feel more comfortable.”
Tozer adjusted to being filmed on Wrexham duty but he finds it difficult to get his head round the fact that billboards advertising the documentary have popped up in some of America’s biggest cities.
“I know people who have been to America and they have been like ‘you are on a picture in America’,” said Tozer.
“It is bonkers. They are really pushing it over there.
“I’ve seen the ‘All Or Nothing’ documentary and ones like that, it is going to be similar to that and they are all really good to watch.
“Hopefully ours is good and it has a bit of a different narrative to it than what the others do.”
The first episode premiered in America yesterday and will be available in the UK today, with the documentary being streamed on Disney+.
Club staff, players, and coaches were last week treated to a special screening of the documentary ahead of the worldwide launch, although Tozer was absent, but the defender is looking forward to seeing the end result.
“It will be nice to see it,” said Tozer. “As a player, to hear your own voice it might be a bit cringeworthy at times!
“Literally anyone and everyone is excited to see it; friends and family, everyone has been saying ‘when is it out?’
“It will be a bit weird but I am looking forward to it.”
