A netball tournament raising ‘heart awareness’ will see non-professional teams from Glyndwr University, the police, and numerous departments from Wrexham Maelor taking part.
The event was thought up by the Cardiac Rehabilitation Team in Wrexham, who care for people following heart attacks or heart surgery.
They aim to raise more awareness of cardiac rehabilitation, which provides specialist, tailored advice, support, and information about coronary heart disease and other heart conditions.
Cardiac rehabilitation helps support the resumption of a full life, the reduction in risk of future heart events and includes components of health education, symptom and risk factor management, medicine management and support on physical activity and exercise.
The team has two office bases, one in Wrexham and one in Connah’s Quay, and consists of Advanced Practitioners, Specialist Nurses, Exercise Physiologist, Technical Instructors, Coordinators, Occupational Therapists, and Administration support workers. They also work closely with other members of the Cardiology teams.

Cerian Williams, one of the team members, explained: “During the initial covid pandemic, we had to stop all our face-to-face sessions with our patients but continued to support them over the telephone. At the time we wanted to think of other ways to give them the information they needed to recover from their heart event.
“Our team then made some videos about medications, exercise, diet, heart disease and stress management. These videos would be emailed to our patients, and we still use them now.
“We also noticed during the first pandemic, that people were afraid to call 999 or weren’t sure when to call 999 if suspected heart attack.
“Also, symptoms of Heart Attack are not always as it seems on TV, there is numerous different symptoms and we wanted to find a way to express the different symptoms and let people know it ok to call 999.

“We have decided to have the Netball day to try to raise awareness and funds for Cardiac Rehabilitation and Heart Awareness. So when we say Heart Awareness it is for people to know of Heart Attack symptoms and it ok to phone 999 and we really want to get this message out to the community.”
The event will take place on September 24.
