Plans have been submitted which could see 24 apartments built above shops in Wrexham town centre.

An application has been put forward to provide accommodation within a unit on Regent Street, which was formerly home to the UnDegUn arts space and JJB Sports store.

It would see the upper two floors of the building, parts of which have also been used as offices, transformed to create both one and two-bedroom apartments.

It follows a number of similar proposals to develop living space above stores in the middle of Wrexham being approved in recent years.

The Leader:

In a planning statement, architects acting on behalf of applicants JSM Company Group said the apartments would help regenerate the town centre.

They said: “The proposed development positively utilises a recently vacant space within an already established area, making use of a derelict building within the town.

“The residential units can cater for single occupants to small families due to the house type.

“Affordability is an increasing problem across the area and a growing issue creating specific difficulties for the local population.

The Leader:

“The application supports the need for varying house types to sustain population levels and to address the issues of urban density.

“The gated development can contribute to the identified regeneration programmes of the area and reduce the worsening vacancy rates of the properties.”

The proposals show that 12 apartments would be created on each of the upper floors.

An empty space will be left in the centre of the building to allow daylight in.

Although no mention is made of parking facilities, the application does note the availability of nearby car parks and bus and train services.

Wrexham Council is expected to make a decision on the plans at a later date.
