A series of exciting and fun science lessons to reward excellent learning at a Flintshire high school are proving a huge success.

Aimed at Year 7 and 8 students, the rewards lessons at Flint High School run each half term, with smaller competitions in between, for students to enter.

Each science teacher chooses five students from their classes to participate in the rewards lesson based on their behaviour, effort and enthusiasm in class. The students are then given an invitation to the rewards lesson, each of which has a theme, and is an opportunity to apply their science knowledge and skills in fun and different contexts, whilst getting to try new and exciting activities that don't necessarily fit into the curriculum but that teachers feel they would enjoy.

The science teachers transform their rooms and the corridor to create a wonderful, positive, and immersive atmosphere for the students for the rewards lessons.

So far this year there's been a Valentine's Day rewards lesson where students conducted chemistry experiments with heart shaped sweets, and dissected a heart, an Easter Bunny murder mystery requiring students to use their forensics skills to solve clues and work out who 'killed' the Easter Bunny, and the most recent lesson was based on a theme of being stranded on a beach. For this, the students needed to use their engineering skills to create a water turbine so that they could generate electricity to charge their phones if ever they were to be marooned on a desert island! They also performed a fish dissection.

Hannah Nelson, KS3 co-ordinator, said: "In science we have a real focus on ensuring that all students are given regular opportunities to be acknowledged for their effort and enthusiasm in lessons as well as academic progress.

"We absolutely love promoting the subject to the students and using the fun reward lesson experiences to enthuse them; they get very excited when we mention the next one is coming up and they genuinely try their best to get on to it!

"We want all students at Flint High to enjoy learning science the way that we, as teachers, did in school. We are so passionate about our subject and just want to share that enthusiasm with them. All the teachers, and our science technician, Kelli Andrews, have really thrown themselves into promoting, organising and making sure the students have the very best experience. It's such a team effort and it makes me very proud to be part of such an inspiring group of teachers.

"We have certainly noticed a more positive atmosphere in the department since we have been running these reward lessons, they have captured the imagination and interest of our learners. Students are incredibly proud to be invited to take part in the rewards lesson and this has then resulted in them remaining more engaged and positive in their regular science lessons.

"We hope that as a result of students having a more positive experience in science, they might consider continuing their learning into higher education and maybe even a career in science.

"But most of all, we just hope that they enjoy our subject and spending time learning all the wonders science has to offer. It has been an absolute pleasure organising these rewards lessons and I can't wait to run some more!"
