THE LOSS of key Deeside seats has seen Labour has failed to secure a majority in Flintshire.
Pending the results of two wards which are being re-counted on Saturday morning, Welsh Labour has 28 councillors in Flintshire following the local election.
Welsh Labour went into the election with the majority 34 councillors, but losses announced on Friday in Connah’s Quay and Queensferry has left them facing having to form a coalition – falling short of the 34 they needed to form a majority.
The significant gains were made by Independent councillors, who took seats in Connah’s Quay Golftyn, Wepre and Central wards, as well as the Queensferry seat.
With two seats still to be contested, Labour has the most seats with 28, but lost senior figures such as Paul Shotton – who lost his Connah’s Quay Golftyn seat.
Labour clung on to their Holywell Central seat by the skin of their teeth - with Ted Palmer re-elected by the difference of one vote. He won 224, and Daniel Thomas (Independent) 223.

They also made key holds in Flint, retaining each of their three seats in Coleshill and Trelawny ward.
Connah’s Quay South is undergoing a third recount on Saturday morning, and Buckley Bistre West is having its second recount.
