WREXHAM Council has revealed the nature of work currently taking place on the old Hippodrome site.
The local authority acquired the Henblas Street site earlier this year amid calls to redevelop it.
A petition was launched to build a theatre on the site of the old cinema. It has also been suggested that the site should be turned into a "pocket park" to provide green space for shoppers and people living in the town centre, and Wrexham Council recently said it is keeping "options open" over what to do with the land.
In recent days, people have noticed that work is taking place on the site - sparking local intriguige about what is being built there.
However, Wrexham Council has said the area is undergoing work to tidy it up and secure it.
A council spokesperson said: “We acquired this site earlier this year and it is now being secured with new fencing and a tidy up of the ground surface.
“The site has been empty since 1998 and public safety is important as is the visual impact of the derelict site on Henblas Street which needs addressing now in preparation for the area to be redesigned for future use.”
Plans tabled in 2018 for a mixture of shops and apartments on the site fell through, and it has remained derelict since.
