TWO local MPs have reacted to Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak being fined over lockdown parties at Downing Street.

Both have rejected calls to resign after being handed fixed penalty notices by the Met Police for breaching Covid regulations for attending a birthday gathering for the Prime Minister in June 2020.

The Prime Minister and Mr Sunak have apologised, but are facing calls from MPs saying they must quit.

The Leader: Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak. Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak.

Labour's Alyn & Deeside MP, Mark Tami, said: "I am shocked that a serving Prime Minister who has received a criminal sanction has not resigned on the spot.

"But as we know with Boris Johnson he is someone who considers that the rules do not apply to him and are just for the rest of us. He has clearly breached the Ministerial Code on multiple occasions in seeking to mislead Parliament about the goings on in Downing Street.

"It is an insult above all to the families of the bereaved who followed the rules he set while he and others partied at Number 10."

Mr Tami continued: "If he had any self-respect or concern for the people of this country he would go now and take the Chancellor with him.

"We are told that now is not the time because of the war in Ukraine - thank God we didn’t take that view in 1940 when the House of Commons removed another Prime Minister who was clearly not fit for office."

Conservative MP for Clwyd South, Simon Baynes, said: "The last two years have been extremely difficult for everyone and the Prime Minister is right to have apologised again.

"The matter has been appropriately dealt with and now we should let him continue to provide the outstanding leadership he has shown throughout the Ukraine crisis."

Sarah Atherton MP and Rob Roberts MP have both been approached for comment.
