Wrexham Council hope that work on Newbridge Road will start later this year after securing a multi-million pound funding package. 

The council has been awarded £2.8 million by the Welsh Government to carry out vital repairs to the B5605 in Newbridge.

The road was severely damaged in Storm Christoph last year, and has remained closed ever since.

The Welsh Government had already awarded Wrexham Council £175,000 for ‘ground investigation and detailed design of remedial works’.

Following complex geo-technical surveys and cost analysis, the council recently submitted a business case to the Welsh Government to help fund the repairs.

Wrexham Council said it’s now been confirmed that Ministers have approved the business case, paving the way for work to begin later this year.

The council admitted it’s been a challenging situation for local communities, with many motorists having to drive miles out of their way.

As well as providing a daily travel route for local people, the road also serves as a diversion when the A483 bypass is closed.

This was especially the case during Storm Dudley and Storm Eunice as motorists were diverted through Llangollen. 

A spokesperson for Wrexham Council said: “Repairing this road will make a massive difference to people in Newbridge, Cefn Mawr and Rhosymedre – as well as surrounding communities like Plas Madoc, Ruabon and Chirk.

“It’s not a straight-forward road-repair – the damage is substantial and we’ve had to undertake a lot of in-depth geo-technical assessments and cost analysis.

“But we’re delighted we’ve been able to secure this funding, and look forward to reopening this key piece of infrastructure.”
