Councils and MPs from Wrexham and Flintshire have given their views on the new Government scheme aimed at helping refugees fleeing from Ukraine.

On Monday, the Government launched its new humanitarian scheme, which is allowing people the opportunity to register an interest in housing refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine.

Members of the public will be able to nominate a Ukrainian family to stay with them for at least six months. They will also receive a payment of £350 a month for housing the refugees.

Both Wrexham and Flintshire councils have welcomed the new campaign.

A joint statement from Cllr Mark Pritchard, Wrexham Council Leader and Chief Executive Ian Bancroft, said: “Wrexham has a long and proud history of welcoming refugees and supporting them adjust to life here.

"There has already been a huge outpouring of local support to Ukraine and we stand alongside the rest of Wales as a Nation of Sanctuary to offer our support to those fleeing from Ukraine.

"We have no doubts our residents will do everything in their power to continue to help and welcome Ukrainians to Wales during these worrying times.”

Flintshire Council's Chief Executive, Neal Cockerton, said: “As a County of Sanctuary, Flintshire is ready to carry out our duties and obligations to all refugees and those fleeing from Ukraine will receive the same welcome.

"We have a strong background of assisting and supporting refugees in our local communities and have done so for many years."

MPs from the region have also given their thoughts on how their constituencies can support the scheme, where possible.

Wrexham MP Sarah Atherton said: “It will be up to individuals and families across Wrexham to assess whether they can provide assistance through this scheme, but our town’s response to the Ukraine crisis has already been incredible.

"I am sure our town will continue to show their support for Ukraine and Ukrainians in whatever ways they can.”

Delyn MP Rob Roberts said: “I’m sure that people in Delyn and across the UK will provide assistance where they feel they can.

"It’s important to remember though that not everyone’s personal or domestic circumstances will be such that volunteering for this scheme would be appropriate so we need to take care to ensure that there isn’t any scorn or disdain aimed at those people who would like to be able to assist but don’t feel able to on this occasion.

"North East Wales as a region has a strong history of welcoming those from overseas and helping them integrate into our communities and I am sure the same will apply to those families who are being driven from their homes by the criminal aggression being shown by Russia.”
