A MAN has had his jail time extended after attacking a fellow prisoner at HMP Berwyn in Wrexham to "clear a drug debt".
Thomas Lloyd, 21, appeared at Mold Crown Court via video link for sentencing on Thursday, February 24.
Lloyd, formerly of Smithfield Street in Dolgellau, had previously admitted assaulting complainant Daniel Jones at the Wrexham prison in April 2021.
Andrew Green, prosecuting, told the court that on April 3 the defendant approached Mr Jones and told him he wanted to speak to him.
He followed him into his cell and unleashed a series of punches and knees to the complainant's face and head.
Mr Jones believed he had been knocked unconscious, coming round on the floor afterwards with a bruised and bleeding face.
Lloyd has since been transferred to HMP Parc in Bridgend.
Simon Rogers, defending, read a short statement his client wished to have spoken in court.
In it, he said he was "very sorry" for the pain he inflicted upon Mr Jones, and that he wished he could "turn back time".
Mr Rogers continued: "No doubt there were issues at Berwyn with Mr Lloyd.
"He has been diagnosed with complex PTSD and he was in receipt of anti-psychotic medication.
"When he arrived at Berwyn he was taken off that medication and he tells me he was the victim of bullying. There is also drug misuse by him in respect of spice.
"There was a drug debt because of that and he committed this offence because if he did it would pay off his debt – also because he was threatened.
"That does not excuse what he has done and he is extremely remorseful.
"His behaviour since being transferred to Parc has been excellent."
Judge Rhys Rowlands told the defendant: "It was entirely unprovoked and involved a significant degree of premeditation."
The Judge handed down a 10-month sentence to be served consecutively, in addition to his ongoing 64-month prison sentence.
