Preparations for the Mold Pancake Races are underway, with a sweetshop and ice cream parlour getting ready to create their piles of durable pancakes.

Spavens, on King Street Mold, is not only generously donating all the pancakes for the races, but they are also supplying sweet-shop prizes for the fastest adult and children's teams.

Making a pancake strong enough to survive four laps of the race, whilst being tossed - and sometimes dropped - takes some doing. But over the years the team at Spavens has developed the perfect batter.

Co-owner of Spavens, Alan Spaven, said: "We do all we can as a local business to support events and activities in Mold. The Pancake Races are a smashing community event bringing people of all ages together for a fun afternoon."

The Pancake Race rules are very simple – teams of four run in a relay, each person, wearing an apron, runs one length of Daniel Owen Square, tossing and catching their pancake three times. They then hand over their pan, pancake and tie their apron onto the next person in their team.

Teams will be timed and the fastest adult team and children's team, which has tossed their pancakes the correct number of times, will win a prize from Spavens.

The Pancake Races are organised by Mold Town Council and Cittaslow, Mold.

Jane Evans, events and community engagement officer at Mold Town Council, said: "This is the sixteenth year that we've been celebrating Shrove Tuesday in Mold with Pancake Races. They're always popular, with local residents, businesses and schools taking part, and people coming along to cheer our race-goers. We look forward to seeing you on the day".

The annual races this year are on Tuesday 1 March starting at 2pm in Daniel Owen Square, Mold CH7 1AP. You can enter the race on the day, from 1.45pm. If you don't have a team of four - don't worry, there will be plenty of willing runners to join your team.

Entry to race and to watch is free, with pans, pancakes and aprons provided for the runners.

If you would like to pre-register a team, help as a volunteer on the day, or receive any further information, please email Jane Evans at events@moldtowncouncil.org.uk or call 01352 758532.
