CANCER Research UK has thanked the people of Wrexham for raising £2.7 million by supporting their local charity shop over the last 30 years as it gets set to close its doors.
The Hope Street shop, which opened 1990, is due to close its doors for the final time on Saturday, February 26.
Josephine Mewett, head of retail operations at Cancer Research UK, issued a heartfelt thanks to all the staff and volunteers who have kept the shop going since it opened in 1992.
“We’ve had some of the most amazing staff and volunteers in the Hope Street shop and they have done a fantastic job over the years,” she said.
“I want to say a huge thank you to each and every one of them.
“Sadly, as the lease was up for renewal, we have made the decision to close the store as it’s not sustainable to keep it open.”
With around 19,600 people diagnosed with cancer every year in Wales, people in Wrexham are being encouraged to help continue the charity’s mission by visiting their nearest Cancer Research UK shop in Watergate Street, Chester, or by shopping online.
Josephine added: “Our pioneering work has helped save millions of lives - but that’s only possible thanks to the commitment of our supporters and volunteers.
“Without them it would not be possible to fund outstanding scientists, doctors and nurses so we’d like to thank people in Wrexham for their dedication to the cause.”
Cancer Research UK spent more than £4 million last year in Wales on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research.
