The Chirk Gardeners Club is to reopen at the end of February with a talk from ‘The Compost King’.
The club is on a quest to rebuild following Covid restrictions and would like to see new members join in.
They meet monthly and have a range of guest speakers booked for their 2022 programme, starting with Mick Poultney, also known as the ‘The Compost King’, at the first meeting on February 28.
Mick is the chair of the West Midlands District Vegetable Society and several other gardening organisations. He is also a regular contributor to Gardeners' World Live and similar events. Mick will be giving a talk entitled Raised Beds and No Dig Cultivation.
He has written several books and will be bringing items for sale on the evening.
The chair, Dawn Gough, said: “Covid has been a horrible time but one positive to come out of it is that the nation has rediscovered it's love of the outdoors and gardening.
“Many people took up gardening for the first time and seed companies actually ran out of stock.
“Hopefully as a club we can build on this new interest in gardening and welcome many new members.”
They are also looking for people who know anything about the history of the club.
Dawn added: “Sadly during covid we lost two of our longest and most loyal members and it's made us realise that we would like to know more about the history of our club.
“We think Chirk is one of the oldest gardening clubs in the area and we think it's been going for over 30 years but if anyone knows when it was formed or anything about it's formation or memories from the past we'd love to know.”
The membership is just £10 per year or £2 per meeting which includes refreshments. They meet in the Parish Hall in Chirk on the last Monday of the month from February -July and September - November at 7.15pm. They also have a lift to the meeting room if needed.
