THE LEADER'S Emergency Hero of the Year Winners, North East Wales Search and Rescue (NEWSAR), were thrilled to receive their trophy and certificate.

We launched the Leader Community Heroes 2021 awards in November last year to honour those community heroes who have gone above and beyond.

Announcing the winners in December, NEWSAR chairman Mike Waters said she was "thrilled" the team had won the Emergency Hero of the Year category.

“I am really thrilled the team members of NEWSAR have been recognised as the Emergency Heroes of the year by The Leader. None of the team members think of themselves as heroes, or being heroic in what we do," he said.

“We’re all just ordinary people who apply trained skills to help others when they most need it.”

NEWSAR's team of volunteers work 365 days a year and receives no government funding for their hard work so they are constantly fundraising to cover costs.

Members of the NEWSAR team - Derek Strugnell, deputy team leader, Gill Brailsford, fundraising officer and Gerald Davison, team member, collected the award.

Mr Davison said: "It was a great honour to be able to collect the certificate and trophy. Thank you to The Leader for this award which recognises all the work done by our team members in 2021."
