Groups across Caia Park have received Christmas Hampers from Mecca Wrexham as part of a Christmas appeal.

Mecca Bingo in Wrexham has donated 50 Christmas hampers to several groups across Caia Park, with help from Caia Park Partnership for their Everyone Deserves A Christmas appeal and hamper collection. The groups were older vulnerable people, a men's mental health group, a parenting group, families in poverty and also cases where people were identified as not having anything for Christmas.

Each Hamper was worth £50 and as a company, Mecca has managed to donate 4,000 hampers, totalling a cost of £200,000. The money was raised in the clubs, where they hosted raffles and charity games.

Tracy Leigh, of Mecca Wrexham said: "Hospitality has struggled so much this year, it was a chance to say we've not forgot about the community and hopefully the community won't forget about us when it reopens.

"If you were to go out and buy yourself some goodies for Christmas, that is what was in it. The whole thing is called Everyone Deserves a Christmas and that's the whole point of it."

The hampers consisted of foods to make a Christmas meal. The idea was that people might be able to buy themselves the basics, so the hampers were filled with treats and filled with enough food to make a roast dinner.

It came with a fresh chicken, ham, potatoes, vegetables, cranberry sauce, and stuffing. There was also Christmas pudding with custard and cheeses and crackers. These are things that the recipients would not ordinarily be able to afford.

Tracy added: "Just because they don't have the money doesn't mean they shouldn't have the nice things on Christmas day. We got them something nice to eat on boxing day as well, snacks, selection boxes for kids."

The older peoples activity worker at Caia Park Partnership, Kath Williams, added: "It's amazing. The support has been fantastic and some of the older people that have been really isolated were brought here to play bingo last week so they saw all the hampers and they were just overwhelmed with the support."

Sarah Atherton, the MP of Wrexham, also helped load the vans that took the parcels tot he groups.

Jane Wedley, of the North Wales and North West England Rotary Passport Club also helped. As part of the project, they organised a Christmas Bag appeal for children, who recently received the bags. Mecca helped collect toys, and some of the recipients of the bags were homeless and in temporary accommodation.

She explained: "130 went out to the Wrexham area and 30 went to Caia Park Partnership so there's a bag of gifts for children with brand new toys worth about £20 each. This is connected to these food parcels as well, so the kids have had a Christmas bag."
