The Covid-19 pandemic has seen people go above and beyond to help others, including the team voted Lockdown hero of the year.
The winner of our Lockdown hero of the year, Team Red, have done some brilliant work to support people throughout the pandemic and are “over the moon” after winning the award.
Team Red, a non-profit volunteer group set up during lockdown have provided food packages for the NHS and people in isolation, have delivered numerous Christmas dinners and raised vital funds for Welsh Mountain Zoo, to name a few examples.
Julie Jones, said: “We’re all over the moon.
“It’s just, wow.
“It’s so nice to have a bit of recognition because we really have worked hard and we never really switch off.
“We’re elated with it, over the moon.
“To think you’ve helped people at some point is what we’re all about. We’re not about the praise, although it is lovely to get some.
“Don’t get me wrong, but we’re just about helping and making people smile.”
Our judges also wanted to recognise the work Donna Woodcock had done at Penygelli Hall care home during Covid with a Highly commended award.
Donna, who was nominated by colleague Hayley Callaghan, was quick to turn the attention onto her staff.
She said “I think this is such a lovely gesture and I am very grateful for the effort made to nominate me for this award.
“However, all the staff who work at Penygelli Hall have played a huge part in keeping people safe and without everyone working together as a team this would not have been achievable.
“So my thanks go to everyone of my staff for their commitment and their continued efforts to support the people we look after.”
The lockdown hero of the year award was sponsored by Kellogg's.
A spokesman said: “At Kellogg our vision is a good and just world where people are not just fed but fulfilled. Our world-famous brands include Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, Special K, Nutri Grain, Kellogg’s Bran Flakes and Pringles.
“We’ve been making some of our bestselling cereals in Wrexham since 1978 and are proud to be part of this community in North Wales.
“Kellogg places great importance on supporting our local communities, it’s at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we are honoured to support the Wrexham Leader Community Heroes Lockdown Award.
“The pandemic has been a challenging time for many people, particularly the most vulnerable, so this is a great opportunity to honour the local heroes who went above and beyond for our community.”
