RESIDENTS and community groups gathered together to help ‘Tidy Mold’ over the weekend.
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation, Mold Town Council’s annual four day Spring Clean has not been able to take place since 2019 and Springy the Town Mascot had been worrying about the litter and weed build up in the town.
So to save Springy anymore concern, the council organised a one day ‘Tidy Mold’ event focusing on cleaning and tidying the town centre.
Despite the predicted downpour of rain, the weather was dry and the sun even came out whilst over 60 volunteers carried out a number of tasks which included litter picking, painting benches, deep cleaning, pruning and weeding the flower beds.
Jane Evans, Mold Town Council events and community engagement officer said: “I’m really pleased by the number of people that came along on the day to support the town. Throughout the five hours our volunteers collected over 81 bags of rubbish and other larger items that had been fly tipped.
"On Daniel Owen Square our volunteers cleared, weeded and pruned the flower beds and filled six – one tonne bags, which were taken to the recycling centre in Nercwys by one of the volunteers.
"It was great to see the younger children who had come along with their parents or were part of the 3rd Mold Brownies or 1st Broughton Scout Group learning about the importance of not disregarding litter in the first place and taking pride in their town.
"I would also like to thank members of NEWSAR (North Wales Search and Rescue) who volunteered on the day. Just after they had finished here in Mold, they received a call out and had to go along to Llangollen to help a person in need. I am in awe of how much great work they do especially as it is all voluntary. Overall it was a very successful day and I would like to express my thanks to everyone who participated today.”
Mayor of Mold Councillor Sarah Taylor said: “I was delighted to take part in the Tidy Mold event at the weekend and I am extremely grateful to the volunteers, fellow councillors and our officers who all took part.
"A number of volunteers including myself, Councillor Karen Hodgkinson and our events officer Jane Evans litter picked along Tyddyn Street and once again it was disappointing to see that this area is still being used for fly tipping. Along Tyddyn Street we pulled out of the grass verges a large number of items that had been dumped there as well as collecting over 12 bags of rubbish in just under an hour that we spent down there."
Mold Town Council would like to express their thanks and appreciation for the support received from Keep Wales Tidy and Wepre Park who loaned out their litter picks for the day and contributions and donations from local businesses Wynne Construction, Travis Perkins, The Daniel Owen Precinct owners and Poundland.
