THERE are calls for 'bold action' as Wrexham Council is to look at improving parking options in the town centre now that coronavirus measures are being eased.

Earlier this year, a survey launched by Wrexham's MP Sarah Atherton, found that 67 per cent of respondents were not satisfied with the parking options in Wrexham town centre.

Of those who responded, 64 per cent wanted cheaper parking options in town.

The survey also suggested parking issues were causing Wrexham businesses to miss out in favour of Broughton, Chester and Oswestry.

Ms Atherton sent her findings to Wrexham Council.

Now, the council has responded, saying that it will use the findings from the survey as it looks to make more improvements to parking provision in the town as it comes out of lockdown.

Writing to Ms Atherton, Darren Williams, Chief Officer Environment & Technical at Wrexham Council, said: "As you will be aware, we have a mixed picture in terms of parking in Wrexham town centre, with some private and some public car parks; some long-stay and some short-stay etc.

"During the pandemic, Wrexham Council has been mindful to support local businesses and the economy with free and now 'free after 11' arrangements currently in place.

"As we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic we will be considering our long-term approach to our Council-owned car park, and the insight offered from your survey will prove invaluable for those considerations."

Ms Atherton said she hoped measures such as the 'free after 11' scheme were encouraging more shoppers to visit.

She added that the results showed “bold action” were needed, and she asked the council to “consider what more could be done to support our town centre”.

Ms Atherton said: “The Council are right that as we emerge from the pandemic it is important that we take stock of what people want for our town and I am pleased that my survey gave Wrexham residents a chance to make their voice heard on this matter.

"Moreover, I am glad that the Council will be taking the findings of the survey into account and I look forward to hearing more about their long term approach to car parking in Wrexham.

“As said before, though, the Council-owned car parks are not the only source of worry and frustration for many Wrexham residents."

She added that she would raise issues relating to the management of private car parks in Parliament as it was a UK-wide issue.
