POLICE have reassured residents who may have heard a loud bang around Wrexham last night.
A controlled explosion involving a Second World War-style mortar bomb took place in the Rhos mountain area at around 5.45pm yesterday (Friday).
North Wales Police said that the bomb was discovered by a member of the public, with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team quickly on scene to deal with the incident.
Loud bang
The North Wales Police community alerts service published an explanation for any residents in the Rhos and Penycae area who may have been alarmed by the loud bang.
The message says: "Just a quick message in case you heard a loud noise in the Rhos/Penycae area this evening around 17:45. A controlled explosion took place in the Rhos mountain area this evening due to a member of the public finding a WW2 style mortar bomb and was unsure if it was still active or not.
"Thankfully the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team were out quickly to assist us in dealing with the matter, meaning the the road up Rhos mountain did not have to be closed for long.
"Just wanted to put to bed any potential speculation regarding what the noise was! Have a good evening PCSO 3629 Sanders."
