HOMOPHOBIC abuse sent to a Welsh Government minister’s wife has been slammed as ‘unacceptable’.

Laura Murton, who is married to Delyn’s Labour MS Hannah Blythyn, shared the shocking emails sent to her on social media.

Ms Murton was told – via her work and personal email address – to ‘abandon’ her sexuality and ‘leave’ Ms Blythyn by a person claiming to be a Christian evangelist from London.

They went on the provide reasons they believed she should listen to them.

This included reference to a 2019 study that homosexuality isn’t generic, and instead believes it to be a lifestyle choice.

The person also informed Laura that they have a friend who was once gay but is now married with children after accepting Jesus Christ into his life.

The email writer went on to offer up web links for resources that could help ‘reprogramme’ the subconscious mind – akin to so-called conversion or ‘gay cure’ therapies.

Another point included that the ‘long-term survival of the indigenous white people’ was being threatened by gay marriage – along with high abortion rates and low fertility rates.

The person ends by offering to call Ms Murton and discuss ways to ‘help’ her.

This all comes weeks after Ms Blythyn announced Welsh Government ambitions to become the most LGBTQ+ friendly nation in Europe.

At the time, Ms Blythyn – who became one of the first three openly gay Members of the Welsh Parliament upon her election in 2016 - shared her vision of national commitments to achieve this goal.

It included seeking the devolution of powers relating to the Gender Recognition Act, using all available powers to ban LGBTQ+ conversion therapy and to support Prides across Wales by sponsoring Pride Cymru, establishing a Wales-wide Pride Fund and appointing a Wales-wide co-ordinator.

Speaking about the abusive messages, a Welsh Government spokesperson said: “This type of homophobic abuse is entirely unacceptable and demonstrates all too clearly why the work of this Government on the LGBTQ+ action plan is so important.

“Our plan seeks to tackle this type of discrimination, address structural inequalities and create a society where LGBTQ+ people are safe to live and love authentically, openly, without prejudice, judgement and bigotry.

“We would urge everyone to take part in shaping the equal Wales we all want to see by contributing to our consultation process.”
