A MAN has been jailed after he admitted handing drugs over to a HMP Berwyn inmate during a visit to the prison.

Kieran Lewis Stanistreet, of Kingswood Road in Eccles appeared at Mold Crown Court via video link from HMP Forest Bank.

The 30-year-old had admitted conveying four prohibited items into the prison in September 2019.

They were MDMA, cannabis, oxandrolone and oxymetholone.

Daffydd Roberts, prosecuting, told the court that on September 11 Stanistreet visited a prisoner named Jonathon Ainsworth at the Wrexham jail to hand over drugs.

He'd travelled there couple of times before, to give the impression he was a "lawful visitor."

The Leader reported in April how Ainsworth had his custodial term extended by 20 months for his part in the offences.

Stanistreet handed over a package towards the end of his visit - in an "unsophisticated" manner which was "clearly seen."

After Ainsworth was searched, the item - containing 22 MDMA tablets, 48g of cannabis, 181 oxandrolone tablets and 49 oxymetholone tablets - was found.

Its contents were worth up to £2,000 in a prison environment, the court heard.

Mr Roberts said Stanistreet had 26 convictions for 56 offences, none of which related to drugs supply.

One related to simple possession of cannabis.

Stuart Duke, defending, said: "He is well aware he will receive a custodial sentence and he has no complaints.

"He has struggled with drug misuse for a number of years and he now hopes to turn the corner."

Judge Niclas Parry told Stanistreet: "You've been to prison before, you know the score.

"You know how valuable drugs are in prison - they're the cause of ill-discipline, bullying and they make the rehabilitation of prisoners virtually impossible."

The Judge handed down a custodial term of 16 months on the lead offence involving MDMA.

No separate penalty was imposed in respect of the other substances.

Judge Parry added: "Do your time, get your head down and try to make something of your life."
