A WREXHAM charity which supports refugees is holding a special fundraiser to mark its first birthday.
Refugee Kindness - North Wales will be holding a cake sale outside Yellow and Blue on Henblas Square on Saturday, as well as a raffle via its Facebook page.
The charity says the fundraisers are needed so that it can keep going and doing its important work.
The cake sale begins at 10am on Saturday and will include sweet and savoury cakes from countries including Syria, India and Africa. The tasty treats on offer include baklava, halwa and falafel.
Meanwhile, the raffle tickets cost £5 each and can be bought via the charity's Facebook page - www.facebook.com/RefugeeKindness. Prizes include a £100 gift voucher for The Boat at Erbistock and a bottle of Aviation Gin from Saith Seren.
The raffle will be drawn live on this Facebook page on Saturday, August 28.
Rollercoaster of a year
Refugee Kindness was founded by Rachel Watkin, from Rossett, with the aim of matching donated items with local refugee families.
One year on, Refugee Kindness has charity status and currently supports 57 families, which is around 220 people, including 100 children. These families live across Wrexham, Colwyn Bay and Rhyl.
The charity, which also has 28 volunteers, reaches out to refugees in the local area providing donated clothing, shoes, children’s toys and books, essential furniture, volunteer opportunities, friendship and support.
A charity spokesperson said that they urgently needed to raise more funds to be able to continue, with the board of trustees reviewing the charity’s position at the end of September.
General Manager, Jordan Hughes, said: “It’s certainly been a rollercoaster of a year, but we’re so proud to have been able to help so many families in such a short space of time. The support from the local community with donations and help has been fantastic, so running the raffle and having the cake sale is also a way to say thank you them.
“The generosity of local businesses for the raffle has been wonderful and we’re really hoping this will help to raise much needed funds for the charity to be able to continue and grow.”
