RUMOURS abound that Wrexham AFC co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will make their long-awaited visit to the town before the end of the month.
Ryan's new movie Free Guy about to hit cinema screens this week, covid restrictions relaxed in both England and Wales, and Wrexham are due to play their opening home game of the new season on August 21.
So, it would seem, the time is more opportune than it has been since the pair completed the much-publicised takeover of the club in February.
A cryptic tweet by Aviation American Gin, owned by Reyniolds and one of Wrexham AFC's new sponsors, told followers to save the date of August 19 followed by plane and cocktail emojis. Although the emojis could simply reference the company's name, it has fans in Wrexham speculating that August 19 could be the day they have been waiting for.
Wrexhamisthename tweeted: "2 days before the Wrexham game...?"
Spirit of ‘78 replied: “Stand aside the Rs are coming” just in time for Yeovil."
Steven Jon Parry asked: "Going to be at the match then, Ryan?"
Hugo Matthews tweeted: "Could we be seeing the awaited debut of Rob and Ryan in Wrexham?"
In a recent Sky News interview, Ryan outlined what he and Rob would do first when they arrive in Wrexham.
The Canadian actor said: "I think the first thing we're going to do is we're going to go to The Racecourse and just spend some time on the ground and just kind of try to absorb as much of the legacy as we can of the club and Wrexham."
"And then we're going to jump into the community as much as we can."
What Rob and Ryan should do when they visit Wrexham (after they've visited The Racecourse):
1. Have a pint in The Turf
The Turf is synonymous with Wrexham AFC and The Racecourse ground. Situated on the corner of the stadium, landlord Wayne Jones kept people in Wrexham fed on bacon butties during lockdown. Now pubgoers can be served inside, Wayne and the team are looking forward to the start of the season.
He tweeted: "Actually buzzing for August 21st and the Turf outside Party. 500 reds enjoying themselves before and after the game and hopefully 3 points.
"@RMcElhenney @VancityReynolds sure we can squeeze you in. COYR."
2. Have a pint at the Wrexham Lager brewery
Ok, there might be a pattern forming here. The brewery has a long history with Wrexham and the football club. The award-winning brewery also knows how to throw a party, having hosted one of the first events of its kind post-lockdown with a summer barbecue and music festival last month. Rob and Ryan could also take the opportunity to meet Karl Phillips, aka Bootlegger, who we're sure would be thrilled to meet the second and third most famous blokes in Wrexham. Both actors have links with booze, with Ryan representing Aviation American Gin and Rob's long-running comedy It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia set in Paddy's Pub.
3. Have a roast at the Frisky Pudding
If Britain has a national dish, it has to be the Sunday roast with all the trimmings. So as a visiting American and Canadian, Rob and Ryan have to tuck in to one.
Recently, the Frisky Pudding in High Street, Wrexham, made the boast that it had the best roast in town. With all premium meat used for roasting sourced from Stanley Jones, a third generation farmer and butcher from Rhosllanerchrugog mountain, the roasts certainly look the part. All are served with a giant Yorkshire pudding, roast and mashed potatoes, root vegetables, red cabbage, greens, and real pan jus.
4. Have a liquid nitrogen frozen ice cream at Igam Ogam
Wrexham isn't all about tradition, some businesses are truly innovative. Geeky shop Igam Ogam, on Charles Street, recently reopened as an ice cream shop with a difference.
Co-owner Sean Grantham said: "All ice cream bases are made fresh daily in store with a choice of flavours changing regularly, You will not find any boring combinations here and the fun bit is the ice cream is flash frozen to order with liquid nitrogen at -196°C.
"Using liquid nitrogen creates a truly different ice cream experience as it is frozen so quickly it has no opportunity to create any large ice crystals making it incredibly smooth and velvety. This also means we use absolutely no preservatives or emulsifiers that other traditional ice creams must use."
5. Do a Royal visit style walkabout in the town
Both Rob and Ryan come across as really down to earth, blokes you'd love to have a pint or two with. But excitement for their eventual arrival is at fever pitch, so a walkabout usually reserved for visits by Royals could be the best way of saying hello. It will give them a chance to see a few of the town's landmarks and, more importantly, meet the community and take some socially distanced selfies.
