MORE than 50 hampers full of food and festive treats were given to struggling Wrexham families following a bingo club's appeal.

The Leader reported in December how the town's Mecca Bingo launched the Everyone Deserves a Christmas campaign to help vulnerable families and people living alone.

Operations manager Paula Bryan said she was delighted at the response, which saw a total of 57 hampers made.

The club worked with Reverend Dave Rowlands of Rock Chapel to distribute the hampers.

Paula said: "Reverend Rowlands came to collect them before Christmas and he said there were lots of 'wows' when he handed them out.

"It's been a fantastic response. I am so pleased we've been able to make so many.

"It's also nice to see the community helping each other - especially this year, because people are strapped as it is."

The Mecca campaign began four years ago in Swansea and happened in Wrexham for the first time this year.

Supporters locally include Ann's Travel, Gresford Spar, Morrisons, Primark and New Wave, staff at the town's Primark, Tesco and Farmfoods.

Paula added her thanks to the club's customers - who raised £500 - and to her staff for their help in making the appeal a success.

Nationally, Mecca made 3,100 hampers and generated £185,208 through the campaign.
