A MOTORIST is urging people to slow down while driving over a popular local mountain top pass after he had a lucky escape.

Robert Spindlow, from Bryn Offa in Wrexham, was involved in a collision on the Horseshoe Pass near Llangollen on Friday evening.

The tyres of the 26-year-old's car lost traction on one of the pass' sharp bends which propelled his car up and embankment before flipping upside down in the road.

On one side of the Horseshoe Pass is a steep drop down a valley, and if Mr Spindlow's car had come off the road there and down the slope - it would have resulted in near certain serious injury or fatality.

And Mr Spindlow is now urging motorists to drop their speed significantly while negotiating bends on the Horseshoe Pass.

He said: "Even though I know the road and dropped my speed to about 30 and having almost brand new tyres fitted, my car lost traction on one of the bends and me and my partner ended up climbing the embankment and flipping upside down blocking the road.

"We managed to get out of the car and got my partner to the side of the road.

"We feel extremely lucky to be alive. If I had been going faster, I think I would've bounced off the embankment and gone down the drop.

"I urge any drivers travelling that way to please drop your speed massively."

Mr Spindlow added: "I want to say a big thank you to the two gentlemen and lady that stopped and stayed with us for hours, handing out blankets and covers to help keep my partner warm while the ambulance was on its way. We are home now with minor injuries but mostly unscathed."
