WORK is well under way on a housing development which will see the construction of the first council homes to be built in Wrexham since the 1990s.

A spokesman for Wrexham Council confirmed they were working alongside developers Liberty to build new council homes at the site of the former Nant Silyn residential care home on Pont Wen, in Caia Park.

There will be 14 new properties - including eight apartments, four two bedroom houses, one older person’s one-bed bungalow and one fully adapted two-bed adapted bungalow.

Work began on the site during winter 2019 and is now due to be completed in early 2021.

Cllr David Griffiths, lead member for housing at Wrexham Council, spoke about how the authority was pleased to be building its first social housing development in nearly 30 years.

He said: “We’re absolutely delighted that we’re bringing new social properties in Wrexham, for the first time since 1991, unfortunately they are going to take a little longer to complete than first thought, because of the pandemic, but we are very pleased that we’re able to bring new housing to this site.

“The development will transform the site of the former Nant Silyn care home, which was closed five years ago, into a new community and we’re glad that we’re working alongside Liberty on this new development.

“The Nant Silyn scheme forms the first of a number of social housing developments earmarked for Wrexham, with a further development at Plas Madoc awaiting planning approval.”

Cllr Mark Pritchard, leader of the council, added: “This is an ambitious project for Wrexham Council and will supply lifetime homes for our tenants.

“I’m very pleased that we’re constructing new council homes and that the properties will go a long way to fulfilling the housing need of some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.”
