A COMMUNITY group is urging more volunteers to join their team to continue supporting the most vulnerable during the pandemic.

The Nanny Biscuit group has been supporting hundreds of elderly and vulnerable throughout the coronavirus lockdown to ensure nobody is left behind.

James Hunt, founder of the Nanny Biscuit community project, set up a new community group back in March, along with the other hard-working volunteers, to ensure the elderly and most vulnerable have what they need during this time of crisis.

As a result, the team had over 200 applications from keen volunteers.

Now, four months on, the project continues to thrive, and the group is continuously thinking of more ways they can help those in need.

Since the start of the pandemic, dozens of volunteers have worked day in and day out to provide for the community, whether it be through delivering food packages and medication or subsidised packed lunches for school children.

One project, which really hit off, was the buddy phone call scheme, so those feeling alone and isolated can chat with a volunteer for some social interaction.

James Hunt told the Leader that on average, they made around 20 phone calls a week and the demand continues to rise.

A plea for volunteers has been issued.

The group posted on social media: "We are looking for volunteers to join our Call Buddies team.

"We recognise isolation and loneliness is as a huge social problem - even before the crisis of Covid-19, but now it is an even bigger social issue. So we feel now more more than ever it's important to reach out and support loved ones within our community.

"So if you are able spare a small amount of your time each week, please complete our Volunteer Application form to join."

The group has since been recognised across the UK for the work they are doing. They even received a thank you message from Game of Thrones star Jerome Flynn.
