A SURGEON says he knows its tough to give up cuppas and cwtches with loved ones as he explained how important social distancing is to keeping people safe in Wales.

Mr Phillip Moore, an ear, nose and throat consultant surgeon with Betsi Cadwalader University Health Board, features in a video on behalf of the Welsh Government telling people what is meant by social distancing.

Mr Moore has lived in Wales since 2010 and was honoured at the 2019 National Eisteddfod for his commitment to learning Welsh for the benefit of his patients, so he knows how important cuppas and cwtches (the hugs or cuddles that make you feel reassured by someone who cares about you) are.

In the video, he said: "In a nutshell we've got to stay two metres away from anyone who's not in your immediate family. By which we mean, if you estimate how far it takes to walk two steps, or if you've got short legs like me, maybe three steps. then that would be pretty much the distance that you want.

"It also means that you can't pop over to your neighbours for a cuppa, or you can't give someone a cwtch because you feel like it.

"You've got to stay away."

Mr Moore, who is originally from Barbados and took on his role at Ysbyty Gwynedd in 2010 after working at several hospitals in the UK, also urged people not to be tempted to flout rules because of the good weather.

He said: "Also it means unfortunately that you can't take advantage of the good weather were having and just go on picnics or have barbecues or birthday parties.

"It's tough, it's tough for everyone because as humans we're a very social species, but it's important and you're all doing it and we're really grateful to you for that."

The Welsh Government has published social distancing measures that everyone should take where possible to reduce the social interaction between people.

They are:

Avoid contact with someone who is displaying symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19). These symptoms include high temperature and/or new and continuous cough;

Avoid non-essential use of public transport, varying your travel times to avoid rush hour, when possible

Work from home, where possible. Your employer should support you to do this. Please refer to employer guidance for more information;

Avoid large gatherings, and gatherings in smaller public spaces such as pubs, cinemas, restaurants, theatres, bars, clubs

Avoid gatherings with friends and family. Keep in touch using remote technology such as phone, internet, and social media.

Use telephone or online services to contact your GP or other essential services.
