PENSIONERS are being denied the food they need they need due to panic-buyers clearing the shelves, a concerned resident has said.

Phil Smith, of Gwersyllt, is pleading with members of the public to have some thought for the pensioners who are unable to get the essentials they need amidst the coronavirus outbreak.

He told the Leader that although supermarkets are setting designated hours for elderly customers, this is not being enforced by staff and people are not listening.

He said: "The people of Wrexham need to wake up and realise there are other people out there so stop being so greedy.

"I went the shops this morning and Iceland for example have a designated time slow for the elderly, but in Gwersyllt the stores were full of worried mums buying everything so of course pensioners didn't have a chance.

"Some hours have been set to 7am but what pensioners can get out at 7am? No attempt is being made by staff to stop these people. How greedy can people get?

"People are barging in. All one pensioner wanted to get was a box of eggs and she couldn't. They are being denied the food they need.

"Pensioners are suffering because of the greed in Gwersyllt shouldn’t be allowed. Someone should be on that door. I can get out but others aren't so lucky, something has to be done."

The Leader previously reported that supermarkets came together to issue advice to those who are panic buying and efforts are being made to allow the elderly to get what they need.

But Phil said this is not helping as shelves across all stores are bare.

He added: "Too many people are doing it. They just grab, grab, grab and think of no-one else but themselves,

"They are acting crazy. People need to realise pensioners need to get out and actually be able to go in and get what they need. They aren’t being given that chance.

"If they cant get what they need they will be going hungry. People are in wheelchairs or on a limited budget, what about them?

"Give them a chance. All these supermarkets are the same. People are struggle. It's bang out of order. These people need to be stopped, they need to realise it's not just themselves to look after."
