A FORMER Ysgol Treffynnon pupil visited his old school to talk to year 9 students about the advantages of learning a modern foreign language.

Nathan Hall, 17, is currently studying A Levels in business studies, law and French at Deeside Sixth Form Centre.

As well as improving communication skills, he explained that having a language can increase the chances of obtaining a place at leading universities and is often highly desired by employers. He told them that it can also open up opportunities to gain paid work while studying, which he has done by translating for small independent companies.

Nathan delivered a presentation with interactive features and held a question and answer session at the end of the talk.

He said: “It was great to come in and speak to the students about the benefits of mastering a language, and my own experience of learning French after being inspired by my French teacher, Miss Woodvine.

“The common misconception amongst the group was that learning a language is too difficult. However, even though it is challenging, with continuous work and revision, it's easily manageable. Learning French has enriched my life and I hope I have passed that on to them so that they seriously consider choosing French as an option.”

Sarah Woodvine, head of the Languages and Culture Faculty, added: “It was a real pleasure to work with Nathan. He was one of our highest achievers, particularly in French.

“He was fantastic with our students during his visit, giving them a real insight into the challenges and rewards of learning a foreign language from a young person’s perspective. It was a brilliant opportunity for them, they thoroughly enjoyed it.

“We’re continuing to develop our links with Coleg Cambria to raise the profile of modern foreign languages and increase the level of take up.”
