HUNDREDS of people from across the region began to work off their Christmas dinners by taking part in an annual race around Chester's city walls.

Runners from Chester, Wrexham, Flintshire and further afield took part in the Essar Chester Round the Walls race on Boxing Day morning.

Elliot Cox, from Buckley, retained his title at the Essar Chester Round The Walls Race champion.

The Leader:

The Buckley Runners race ace clocked a time of 23 minutes 51 seconds for the multi-terrain four-and-a-half-mile Boxing Day event - which started and finished on Chester Racecourse.

He finished ten seconds ahead of runner-up Matthew Hammerton, from Romsey Road Runners, while Aiden Heap, representing host club West Cheshire AC, was third in 24 minutes and five seconds.

The Leader:

Charlotte Towers, representing Chester Tri Club, won the women's race in a time of 26 minutes and 39 seconds, ahead of second-placed Charlotte Roach in 26 minutes and 59 seconds and Sarah Hunter, from Ackworth Road Runners, who was third place at 27 minutes and 31 seconds.

Organised by West Cheshire Athletics Club, it is one of the oldest races in the country and has been a near-constant event in the city calendar since its establishment in 1972.

Organisers say that the planned running route follows “the best path to appreciate the city walls”.
