A PONY who was rescued almost two decades ago has been ‘bringing joy’ to people’s lives ever since.

Lenny, a mini Shetland Pony, was rescued by the H.A.C.K Horse Sanctuary when he was five months old, and now at the age of 19 he has been visiting nursing homes to put a smile on people’s faces.

Jane Lloyd told the Leader: “When the charity started it set out to rescue neglected horses and ponies but over the years, we realised that people get enjoyment from being around them and it works well for therapy.

“So, Lenny started off visiting schools and last year he visited his first nursing home.

“His brother was re-homed but we kept Lenny, he’s our mascot. He’s a well-known and well-loved pony.

“Over the past week we have visited four nursing homes and he’s brought a lot of pleasure to older people.”

Lenny has visited Stansty House nursing home in Wrexham, Chestnut House in Hope, Hollybank and Lindan nursing homes.

Jane added: “He’s got such a nice temper, he’s really quiet and just lovely to be around.

“This generation of people in their late 70s and older, horses were so important to them growing up and a lot of people had contact with horses. We find a lot of these residents haven’t seen a horse for a long time so it’s nice to see them reconnect.

“It’s a service we offer free of charge, but donations are welcome, anything we raise goes towards the horses.

“We are the Wrexham Mayor’s chosen charity this year which is also an honour.

“All our volunteers do wonderful work and they don’t get paid for it.”
