SPECTACULAR Great Crested Newts are set to be flourishing in a village park.
Bonc Yr Hafod country park is part of the Johnstown Special Area of Conservation and a strong reason for this is the population of Great Crested Newts that live in and around the park.
April and May is breeding season for the newts and is said to be the best time to visit as the males – who can measure up to six inches – grow a spectacular crest to attract females.
Wrexham Council has recorded footage of the Great Crested Newt in the various ponds around the park and a video can be viewed online at https://news.wrexham.gov.uk/in-search-of-the-great-crested-newtwatch-our-video-and-see-how-we-got-on/
If you are interested in visiting Bonc Yr Hafod, more information can be found on the Wrexham Council website at https://www.wrexham.gov.uk/assets/pdfs/countryside/hafod_walks.pdf - which talks you through the park and the different wildlife. The yellow walk takes in the ponds.
