A TRAIN enthusiast is delighting passers-by on a Wrexham estate as the model railway in his garden continues to grow.

Eddie Martin has been adding to the 00 gauge model layout at his home in Gwenfro, Caia Park, for a number of years.

In the last couple of months, Mr Martin, 47, has extended the model past 160 foot and he says it is bringing smiles to faces and becoming a real talking point on the estate.

The model reached more than 130 feet in track length a couple of years ago, but Mr Martin who has enjoyed the hobby for more than 30 years, has managed to extend it further still.

A member of Wrexham and District Model Railway Club, Mr Martin credits his father for playing a part in his love of railways as he had worked for Great Western.

He said: "It is coming towards summer now and the garden will be full of shrubs and flowers which people often walk past and stop to admire the garden.

"Then they see the train passing through and you see them smile.

"People have asked me why I bother taking pride in it in this area, but I always say 'why not?'.

"It's something different in the area and it makes people happy."

He added: "A couple of years ago the track was 134ft, but now it comes to 160ft.

"Altogether it has taken about three years from when I first started but this extension has happened in the last eight to 10 weeks.

"With the garden as well it is a work in progress and has been a real labour of love."

Mr Martin has previously won an award in the annual Caia Park garden competition run by Caia Park Environmental Group, and says he will be going for honours again at this year's event which takes place in the summer.
