MAPS and letters which give a glimpse into Wrexham’s mining history are to be on display in the town centre for one day.

The documents, which were discovered in a loft during a recent house clearance, were won at auction by young people’s charity The Wrexham Warehouse Project and will be on show for the first time at Wrexham History Fair tomorrow.

Wrexham Warehouse Project director George Powell said visitors to the event, which will take place from 11am to 4pm at the County Borough Museum and Archives, will be able to take away copies of some of the documents.

He said: “There are some cracking letters. Some are dated 1935 and we’ve arranged for staff to photocopy some so people can take them away.

“There is a very funny one about a man delivering coal and making a mess of some washing on a line – the correspondence between the managers is very good.”

Mr Powell said visitors would also be able to register an interest in the organisation’s plans to turn the grade II listed Miner’s Rescue Centre in Maesgwyn Road into a self-sustaining community venue.

A planning application – to convert the building into two self-contained apartments and seven bedsits together with a museum and a cafe – will be discussed by Wrexham Council’s planning committee on Monday.

Mr Powell told the Leader: “We’re hoping anyone with a mining background might want to get involved in the project,

“There is a lot of building work and clearing to be done because it has been vandalised over the years. We’ve got young people involved in training to do the repairs.

“We’re looking at having a wall of red bricks with ex-miners’ names on, like at the Racecourse, in the gallery inside.

“The rent from the young residents in the first two blocks of accommodation will make it self sustaining. At the end of the day we want to create a building to be used by the community.”

Wrexham History Fair – organised by Wrexham Heritage Forum – will feature exhibitions and activities by many local heritage groups including heroic living history re-enactments, talks and tours, musical interludes and activities for younger visitors.
