STAFF at a restaurant were left shaken, not stirred after a Sir Roger Moore dropped in for a bite to eat.

The legendary 007 actor, 86, visited The Hand at Llanarmon on Monday lunchtime and tucked into some local delights.

Sir Roger’s visit was booked in a week ago but staff at the Ceiriog Valley gastro pub didn’t realise until he walked through the door that the Mr Moore in their diary was the iconic silver screen star, who played the secret agent James Bond for 15 years to 1985.

Currently touring the UK, Sir Roger, whose Bond outings include classics The Man With The Golden Gun and The Spy Who Loved Me, took time out to sink his jaws into some local produce and was reportedly delighted with the trout from Chirk Trout Farm.

Staff at the four-star restaurant, which is run by Gaynor and Martin De Luchi, described the former Bond star’s visit as a ‘surreal’ experience.

Grant Mulholland, the eatery’s 39-year-old head chef, said: “He was really nice, very down to earth.

“He had his lunch and we gave him his privacy then had a little chat.

“We took a couple of pictures in the bar and then he went on his way and we all thought ‘did that really happen?’.

“He phoned us back afterwards to say that he enjoyed his meal.

“He said it was the best trout he had ever tasted – so we must be doing something right.”

Eileen Edwards, 58, supervisor at the restaurant, added: “His driver came in first.

“I said to the driver ‘that’s Roger Moore and he said ‘Sir Roger Moore actually’.

“I couldn’t believe it. It was surreal, it really was.”

Sir Roger will resume his tour at the New Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham tonight, where he will be discussing his life and career, with anecdotes ranging from TV series The Saint and The Persuaders, through to Hollywood blockbusters and his time as 007.
