LEE JONES has not applied for the manager’s position at Wrexham but would be open to taking the job if approached.
Jones, who came through the ranks at The Racecourse and returned for a second spell before his playing career came to an end, is the Glyndwr Wrexham Football Academy boss and has management experience with Cefn Druids.
Since Kevin Wilkin was sacked, Jones has been helping caretaker manager Carl Darlington, both pictured right, who has ruled himself out of the running, and the former Liverpool striker admits he would consider taking charge on a permanent basis if asked by the board.
“I have gone down the route of doing my coaching badges and I have completed my pro-licence,” said Jones. “I have got experience in management but I have not applied.
“I am sure the board has got a list as long as their arm of high profile candidates but if they want to come and speak to me they know where I am, I’m here every single day.
“That is entirely up to the football club how they see the club going. I certainly know the club inside and out, I have been here as a player and a coach, and I have been working with the community for the past five or six years.
“I know how the place works but that is not my decision. If they do want to speak to me then I am more than willing to speak.”
Jones admits he has enjoyed being more hands on with Wrexham’s first team.
“The day to day stuff I have enjoyed, I have enjoyed going out coaching alongside Carl who is a fantastic coach,” continued Jones.
“I have enjoyed being in the dug-out again, I’m not going to lie and say I haven’t, but who knows. That is a decision for the board to make.”
Jones believes whoever takes over as manager will have excellent backroom staff to work with.
“At the end of the day it’s not just about a manager, I don’t think, it is about the team that’s here,” said Jones. “You have got Carl, Dai Spendiff the physio, massive experience in the likes of Joey Jones and Andy Davies who oversees all the youth side of things.
“We are a team. Whoever comes in will have their own ideas, might want to keep players, might want to get rid of players, but myself and Carl have kept it ticking over the last four games.
“The club is in good hands, we have got fantastic staff and facilities, and whoever comes in I think it is there to just run with.”
Wrexham, who face lowly Welling United at Park View Road tonight, are unbeaten in four games under Darlington and Jones want to remain unbeaten in the final four matches of the season.
“We have had two wins and two draws, we said to them when we came in that we were going to try and keep it ticking along and your target is can you go unbeaten between now and the end of the season,” added Jones.
“We are halfway there, we have got four games left, four tough games as well, Welling are coming off a good win at Kidderminster on Saturday.
“But we have done our homework on them, we won’t be ill prepared. All we have got to do is look at how we approach a game and if they put in what they have done for the last three weeks, I wouldn’t see it being a big problem.”
Left-back Neil Ashton and leading scorer Louis Moult are available after injury but skipper Dean Keates is rated “50-50.”
