ECSTATIC Wrexham fans streamed out of Wembley after a nail-biting Carlsberg FA Trophy Final which saw the Reds keep supporters on the edge of their seats in a nervy penalty shoot-out before lifting the silverware.
It was all worth it for the rapturous supporters who celebrated with players inside the stadium and then laid claim to Wembley Way following the match.
For many it was a once in a lifetime experience in what was their first ever chance to watch their cherished side on the famous turf, and one they will never forget.
Trevor Lettsome, 60, from Deeside, has been following Wrexham for 50 years and said: “We were the best team and we deserved to win it.
“It has been a great day and it is fantastic to lift the trophy.
“It was a shame to see it go to penalties but maybe we will be back in five weeks time for the play-offs.”
Mike Langdon and Meirig Vaughan followed the Reds to Wembley from Mold.
Mike, 44, said: “I can’t believe it.
“I am a season ticket holder and this has been a fantastic day out.
“I can’t put it into words, I never thought it would happen.”
Meirig, 46, said: “I struggled through four foot of snow to get here and I didn’t take my eyes off it, even penalties – it is wonderful.
“I am in the Mold Road stand for every game but I am worried about promotion now because we looked tired.”
Mary Hill, 70, and Audrey Davies, 75, both from Wrexham, were blown away by the Wembley win.
“Both teams were a credit to the division,” said Mary. “We have had a terrific day
Audrey said: “I never thought I would see it happen but it has been a very enjoyable day. “
Peter Taylor, 66, from Coedpoeth, said he had supported the club for 50 years.
“It has been quite an occasion and a fabulous day,” he said.
“It doesn’t get much closer but it would have been even worse if Grimsby hadn’t missed their penalties.
“Grimsby’s goalkeeper was brilliant because we had lots of chances but he kept Grimsby in it.”
Mark Tami, MP for Alyn and Deeside, was revelling in the atmosphere after the game.
He said: “It is a great day for the fans and the club.
“Penalties are always nervy and after dominating the game you do fear the worst.
“But when Grimsby missed their first one I thought we would be able to hold our nerve.
“I managed to watch them all and I hope the club can build on the result and get back in the Football League.
“My fingernails are still there but my feet are freezing.
“Penalties is a horrible way to lose but there has to be a winner, I am just glad it was Wrexham.”
Will Edwards, from Wrexham, said: “I don’t think there can be anyone left in Wrexham this weekend because everyone seems to be here – it is an amazing turnout.
Neil Thompson, also from Wrexham, said: “We were the better team really and deserved to win so I am glad that’s the way it turned out.
“I didn’t know where to look during the penalties. It was painful but I knew we would win.”
Reds fans David Wilberforce, 28, said: “I am so proud and the team were very good to come from behind and win on penalties.
“I am glad the trophy is coming back to The Racecourse.
Nathan Richards, 24, from Erddig said: “It was awesome. Once Grimsby missed the first two penalties it was ours to lose.
“We looked comfortable in the game and even when Grimsby went ahead we still looked like we would equalise.”
