POSITIVE news has just continued for Cheshire Phoenix during a vital week.
Phoenix are all set for their biggest match of the season when they take on London Lions at The O2 Arena on Sunday in the British Basketball League play-off final.
During the build-up to the big game between the league’s top-two, Nix rookie wing Cam Christon (pictured above) has been named the inaugural winner of the Sixth Player of the Year award.
A new title established this season, the award is given to a player who has made the most significant contribution off the bench throughout the course of the season for their team.
Featuring in 34 of the Phoenix’s 36 championship encounters, Christon only started a handful of those games but was a vital contributor on both ends of the floor in leading Cheshire’s second unit, averaging 11 points in 20 minutes per contest, with solid shooting percentages from all levels.
In the BBL Trophy final triumph over London, Christon added 15 points off the bench.
He told the BBL website: “I’m honoured to win Molten Sixth Player of the Year and want to thank not only God but everyone who voted for me.”
Phoenix head coach Thomas added: “Our depth and the quality of that depth is a huge part of who we are, and the person who embodies that more than anyone has been Cam.
“There have been many times during the season when we could have started Cam but the threat that he has consistently brought from the bench has contributed so much to our success.
“Cam should be very proud of this award; he has put the team’s needs first and starred in his role. I want to say a huge thank you and congratulations to him for being a great team-mate.”
