Ysgol Derwenfa, Leeswood

Following an intergenerational project at the Flintshire school, organised by Dementia Friends ambassador Jane Meakin, a display has been put together for the community.

As part of the project, Year 5 and 6 children interviewed members of the community about the history and heritage of Leeswood.

They gathered at the community centre during the Sunshine Cafe session for the grand unveiling of the permanent display of photographs and reports from the children.

Jane created the displays from the responses of the children and of the photographs and artefacts brought to the sessions by the residents of the village. The children were thrilled to see their hard work that will be proudly displayed in the cafe.

During the morning, headteacher Andrew Jones thanked Jane for her hard work and for giving the children the opportunity. The children from Years 3 to 6 also performed their Welsh songs and recitation from their recent Eisteddfod for the customers and handed out copies of the school news.

St Anne's Catholic Primary School, Wrexham

Children and staff from the Caia Park school took part in a sponsored run for charity Shelter Cymru. They all ran a mile round the track at Queensway Sports Centre, raising an impressive £306.

Ysgol Bryn Gwalia, Mold

Earlier this month, three students from the school, as well as headteacher Lorraine Dalton, attended a reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by The Queen.

The event was to celebrate the work of the WOW Foundation and to mark the end of its inaugural WOW Girls Festival, which has visited all four nations of the UK over the past six months.

Alana, Phoebe and Selena (all Year 4 pupils) chatted with the Queen and her guests throughout the event. They said Queen Camilla was a "really nice, kind person". Alana has also been asked to write about her experience for the children's newspaper First News.

Queen Mathilde of Belgium and the Duchess of Gloucester joined the Queen for the event, with the reception attended by about 150 guests involved in the WOW Girls Festival tour.

Guests at the event included Dame Helen Mirren, Mel B, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Dame Kelly Holmes, Sophia Smith-Galer, Emma Barnett, Laura Bates, Dr Ronx, Doreen Lawrence and Perri Shakes-Drayton.

To celebrate the Queen's role as president of the WOW Foundation and their work in empowering girls and women, Mattel created a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll in the Queen's likeness, complete with a WOW badge! The doll was presented to the Queen at the reception.

The WOW Girls Festival is supported by BBC Children in Need and in partnership with WOW UK Girls Champion Barbie, who are extending the tour to reach primary aged children, and WOW Global Girls Champion Standard Chartered Bank who are supporting the Girls Festival's international reach.

The WOW Girls Festival Bus is funded through a partnership between The WOW Foundation and BBC Children in Need and the tour is supported by Arts Council England.

Ysgol Tanyfron, Wrexham

A national home building company encouraged pupils to discover the joy of reading, by donating £500 towards the World Book Day celebrations at the Wrexham primary school.

Taylor Wimpey is currently building new homes in Wrexham, at the Coed Issa development. The donation enabled the school to purchase a variety of books that resonated with the pupils, fostering a love for reading by allowing them to connect with the stories in a fun and engaging way.

Tournament goal for girls' football squad

A TEAM of Wrexham footballers have made it to a tournament featuring the best in their category.

Wrexham School Girls U11s team have reached the John Mann Festival, which sees the top schoolgirls in the under 11s age group across Wales.

They will compete against Swansea, Flintshire, Cardiff and Vale, Caerphilly and Carmarthenshire for the tournament.

Year 6 teacher at Brynteg CP School, Jack Moulton, is the team's coach. He said: "I have coached them over the past two seasons and they are an excellent group of players.

"The team consists of the best players who attend a Wrexham school. Many of the squad played last year as Year 5 pupils and are now Year 6, so it will be the last time they can compete at U11s level.

"Next year they will compete at U12s with larger team sizes and bigger pitches. We have created a pathway for the schoolgirls, as we also have teams at U13s and U15s level.

"We are hopeful that next year we will also have an U16s team to enable female players compete for their county all the way up to Year 11. This will also allow them to be eligible to be selected to play for Wales Schoolgirls at U16 level."

John Mann Festival will be played at Ocean Park Arena in Cardiff on Saturday, April 20.

Talks with a Teacher podcast host Mr Moulton, added: "Getting to play in the capital and representing your county is a tremendous accomplishment and I wanted this feat to be recognised. Myself and my fellow coach, Llion Morris are delighted with the progress shown by the squad this year and to cap off the season with a trip to the capital is fantastic."
