The Nags Head is somewhere I have been to a few times over the years, and has been a favourite for pub grub for many in Wrexham. So, fancying a late lunch I found myself a quiet corner and ordered a quick meal.

The pub is an iconic building in the city centre, dating back to 1661 according to its website, and is often busy at weekends and during seasonal events. It also has a stunning beer garden that’s popular in the summer.

Earlier this year, the Nags Head did close its doors due to an outbreak of Salmonella, with Public Health Wales confirming that the cases were associated with the pub. Control measures were put in place and no further cases were identified.

Ironically, just days before the closure I had been at the Nags Head where I had ordered some sides to share for the table. My food had been fine, so I was not one of the ones who got poorly, and not put off going again.

This time, I went mid-week, so it was on the quieter side, and decided to order the hunter’s chicken, but with salad rather than chips as I was fancying something light.

For £11.85 I was expecting a small salad on the side but what came was huge! The barbecue sauce, bacon and cheese with the chicken went well with the refreshing salad. There was a good-sized chicken breast and I was impressed by the portion size, despite not having chips.

I then decided to treat myself to a pudding, and I’m so glad I did! It was the blood orange brownie that caught my eye and for £5.95 you couldn’t go wrong.

It was incredibly rich and soft, with the orange flavour coming through strong without being overwhelming. It came with vanilla ice cream, which I’m not normally a fan of, but the richness of the bake made it an enjoyable side so they went very well together. I highly recommend this pudding to all chocolate lovers.

At a total of £21.55 for a main and a dessert, and a pint of diet coke, I thought it was value for money. I can’t fault the food at all and the atmosphere is always very friendly.

I would recommend the pub for anyone who is looking for somewhere to have a catchup with friends over drinks, an evening meal, or even just a quick lunch, like me.

The Nags Head is an all-rounder.
