The site on Wepre Lane has seen several restaurants over the years, and with my dad living just down the road, we were happy to try out the latest.

Having reopened earlier this year after a major revamp, our hungry trio - me, dad and my 15-year-old son - booked in for a Thursday tea time.

The place has a larger than average car park, so no worries about where to leave the car, and lots of great outdoor space, with plenty of seating.

We headed inside and liked what we saw. The vibe is very relaxed and the overall look is welcoming and warm.

Shown to our table, seated by a group of friends already enjoying their food, we ordered drinks and checked out what was on offer.

The Wepre Bar & Grill has a menu that's a bit of a step up from your regular pub grub but with plenty of familiar favourites too.

As well as starters, including Tandoori chicken skewers, baked camembert and garlic and chilli prawns, there is the option of light bites.

Vegetable spring rolls.

These can serve as a starter at £4.50 each or go tapas style with three for £12, the choice including sticky red wine chorizo sausage, buffalo cauliflower bites with blue cheese and Spam fries with garlic dip.

Me and dad went for the salt and pepper chicken bites served with pad Thai veg and teriyaki dip (£6.75 per portion) and the teen had the vegetable spring rolls with a sweet chilli and lime dip (£6).

Both were decent sizes for starters, with the six chicken bites getting a thumbs up. Possibly a little too salty for me but I enjoyed them all the same.

The spring rolls got demolished, which spoke for itself really.

For our mains, the burger-loving lad went rogue. Despite several options - double bacon and cheese, southern fried chicken and the veggie celeriac and beetroot burger - he chose the pulled pork mac n cheese, with garlic ciabatta (£15.50). Finished with a barbecue drizzle, the bowl of pasta went down a storm, and his decision not to go for his usual was not regretted.

I'd offer an opinion myself but the chance to get a forkful was definitely not happening.

Dad went for the skinny chicken burger (£13.50) - chargrilled chicken breast with lettuce, gherkins, tomato, burger sauce in a toasted bun, with skin-on fries.

It may be the healthier option but there was plenty of it. Dad declared it delicious and very filling, although nothing was left on the plate!

For me it was the barbecue chicken burrito (£15.95) stuffed with peppers, onion, rice, cheese and salsa, and served with a side of fries.

Skinny chicken burger.

It was a bit of a beast but I scoffed the lot. There was plenty going on, and I really enjoyed the mix of filling.

Initially I thought the fries could have been a slightly larger portion but they turned out just enough for me.

We really had no business even looking at puddings but we did. We considered the choice better than most dessert menus. It offered raspberry mousse, syrup sponge and a sundae to name just a few but dad went for the cheesecake (£6.50) and it was a no brainer for me, the homemade cherry pie with custard (£6), a classic.

BBQ chicken burrito.

While my son is a burger pro, dad knows a thing or two about a cheesecake, and this one got full marks. It wasn't overly sweet or fussy either. He followed it up with a black Americano (£3.50).

The cherry pie was an individual, latticed bake, very pretty to look at and actually quite large. So my son kindly got stuck in to help me out. It was great comfort food.

During our time there, several others had arrived, including a couple and family group. And it's easy to see why it appeals to so many different people - the choice is good, staff very friendly and the setting itself is really inviting. They also do a good lunchtime menu, which includes afternoon tea, sandwiches and cream tea, as well as a Sunday carvery, which we've pencilled in to sample at another time.

There's been a lot of discussion about the Wepre's choice to be cashless but this wasn't an issue for us, and they are very open about it, stating it clearly on their website.

Overall we were very impressed to have such quality so close to home, and will be back.
