AN INSPIRATIONAL woman has completed her 400 yards at 40 challenge.

Eleven years ago, Rachel Harry was given the news she would be unable to walk or even feed herself when she suffered a hypoxic brain injury whilst giving birth to her daughter, Freya.

Coinciding with her 40th birthday, Rachael’s family set a challenge for Rachel to walk 400 yards unaided.

Her family are now delighted to report that she has now successfully completed her challenge and raised £410 for the Clwyd Special Riding Centre - a charity very close to Rachel’s heart.

The Clwyd Special Riding Centre provides disabled children and adults the opportunity to ride and visit horses. Rachel visits the centre most weeks to ride the mechanical horse she has named Beauty. The exercise from this strengthens Rachel’s core and improves her balance. The centre relies on charitable donations and volunteers to remain open and provide this amazing service.

Rachel’s family said: "When we initially planned Rachel’s challenge, we were hopeful of Rachel walking in a local park unaided for 400 yards. However, we soon realised, during practice sessions that Rachel is easily distracted which affects her balance and concentration - essential for safe independent walking. So, we had to change the plan, aiming for planned, shorter walks in quiet and familiar places. We have recordings of Rachel walking independently around the car parks at therapy matters on two occasions (150 and 200 yards) around the cul de sac near home - three occasions of 50 yards, finally achieving 100 yards and at Clwyd special riding centre

“We wish to thank everyone who has donated since December, via Go Fund Me link or cash, totalling £410. The go fund me link will be open (until) 30th June if anyone else wishes to donate.

"Total donations will be handed over by Rachel to Clwyd Special Riding Centre on Tuesday, 5 July. Be great if you could help with this – it’s been a tough few months”
